Health Professions/Sports Therapy and Exercise Science
Our Health Professions and Sports Therapy and Exercise Science are sister programs that enable students to begin their journey in a 9th grade introductory course-Health Systems and Professions. Students explore a variety of healthcare careers, utilize basic health care equipment and appreciate the foundations of our health care system. In 10th grade students progress along the shared pathway to courses in medical terminology and sports medicine where they obtain HIPAA certification and participate in observational internships. In 11th grade, students continue on to an Anatomy and Physiology course and may apply for a position in our Clinical Observations course, where they have a unique opportunity to learn in our local hospital. The senior year culminates with students choosing a capstone course in either Health Professions or Sports Therapy and Exercise Science. Students may apply for acceptance to our Nurse Aide course which prepares them for the state exam to become employable as certified nurse aide (CNA), or they may take the Advanced Personal Training course and prepare to take the national ACSM CPT exam to become a certified personal trainer. The coursework provides a strong background in the sciences as well as offers CPR certification, dual enrollment college credit and prepares students for post-secondary education in a variety of health care fields: medicine, nursing, physician assistant, physical/occupational therapy, athletic/personal training, nutrition, chiropractic, health policy administration, etc. Students are encouraged to join Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), the Career and Technical Student Organization serving both programs.
